Mentally dividing numbers

You can use mental strategies to find the quotient (answer) to a division problem.

Example:

341  4
340  4 = 85
 4 = 
341  4 = 85

Example:

Written strategies

Numbers with three or more digits can be divided by a single digit. These problems can be solved using a written strategy.

Example:

34  4 = 8 with 2 over
21  4 = 5 with 1 over

So 341  4 = 85 with remainder 1 or 85 r 1.

Multiplication and division are easier if you know your times tables.
