Habits

There are many ways we can take care of ourselves, to keep our bodies happy and healthy.

Good Habits
It is important to exercise regularly to keep your heart and lungs healthy. It also helps develop string muscles and keeps you from becoming overweight or obese.

Healthy eating is another important habit. Some foods are naturally better for the body then others. There are many different diets discussed and advertised in the media, however it is important to listen to a qualified dietician when developing a balanced diet. As a general rule, foods that are high in fibre and vitamins, and low in fat, like whole grains, fruits and vegetables, are especially good for your body. Foods high in protein, like meat, nuts and beans are also important. Foods high in calcium, such as milk, diary and some vegetables, keep your bones and teeth healthy.

It is also important to keep your body clean. This reduces the chances of germs entering your body to make you ill. Bathing regularly, washing your hands after going to the toilet and before meals helps keep you body clean and keep germs out. Brushing your teeth also keeps your teeth clean and helps prevent cavities.

Skin protects us from germs, holds our bodies together and helps us regulate our temperature. As a result, it is important to keep our skin healthy. Sunburn can be painful and it can damage your skin. Skin cancers need to be removed by a surgeon and can be fatal.

The easiest way to protect your skin is to stay out of the sun, especially during times when the sun's rays are strongest, or between 10am and 2pm. Stay indoors or in the shade during these times. Covering your skin with clothing is another good way to protect your skin, and wearing a wide-brimmed hat protects your face and neck. Exposed parts of your body, like your arms, legs, neck and face, should be covered with sunscreen. Many sunscreens have a number on them called the sun protection factor, or SPF. Higher SPF sunscreens are more effective at protecting your skin. Put on sunscreen about half an hour before going outside and put more sunscreen on after swimming.

Bad Habits
Being inactive for a long period of time can make your muscles, heart and lungs weak. Try and do something active each day.

Eating junk food can also be bad for you. Foods like chips, lollies and chocolate are often high in sugars and fats, which should be eaten in moderation.

Soft drinks can also be high in sugars, but can also contain other chemicals, such as artificial colours, flavours and caffeine which can be bad for your heart.
